Welcome !!! It is officially winter and time for that warm comforting food!!!

So you can’t go past the good ol’ fashion porridge where studies have shown porridge is one of the best choices to start your day!!!

Historically, porridge was a staple food in much of the world, including Europe and Africa and remains a staple food in many parts of the world. The dish has traditionally been closely associated with Scotland, possibly because oats can be successfully cultivated on marginal upland soils.

There are now many brands and varieties of porridge out there, however I love the traditional rolled oats and using the slow cooked method maybe easy but I believe it is the best!!!

My hint: Set up the slow cooker on a timer so it comes on during the night ready for breakfast for you and your family in the morning!!!

“Warming Honey and Banana Porridge” is on our Winter menu right here at ‘All About Me B & B”.

1 cup traditional rolled oats
4 cups milk (or half milk, half water for a less creamy version)
pinch of salt

dried fruit
fresh fruit e.g berries and bananas
brown sugar
honey or maple syrup
natural or fruit yoghurt

  1. Place rolled oats and milk (or milk and water) into slow cooker
  2. Put on low and cook overnight for 7-8 hours
  3. In the morning, give the porridge a really good stir – it may have developed a crust on top, however just stir this in to break it up.
  4. Add a drop more milk to loosen, if necessary
  5. Ladle into bowls and add your favourite toppings or choose from my choices above
  6. You can add now some milk or cream

If you are wishing to use some dried fruit, you may like to add them at the start.

Another hint: Warm your bowls up for a few minutes in oven as it keeps your porridge nice and warm!!!

You also may like to caramelised some bananas!!!  So just add some brown sugar in a saucepan with some chopped bananas.  Stir for a few minutes!!!

Now you may like my choice of toppings or you may have another great idea.  Love you hear, so let us know on Facebook  or Instagram!!!
