In The Kitchen With Annette: Date Cream Pie

Welcome back to my Kitchen!!!  And here at “All About Me B & B”, whilst practicing social distancing I thought I would jump into my Kitchen with this recipe.

Why not indulge in some ‘comfort’ food.  Another recipe from my childhood days which I loved cooking for my dad – he had a real ‘sweet tooth’.

Ingredients

2 tablespoons butter
1 tablespoon plain flour
2 cups milk
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup chopped pitted dates
2 egg yolks (keep whites)
1/2 cup extra sugar
prepared pastry case

Method

1. Melt butter and add flour
2. Add milk, sugar and dates – gradually
3. Simmer till dates are soft
4. Add egg yolks
5. Fill prepared pastry case with filling
6. Bake in moderate over for 15 minutes
7. Whilst in the oven, whip the egg whites with the extra sugar
8. Top the pie and return to oven and brown

Did you know, dates are fruits of the date palm tree which have existed since prehistoric times and are believed to have been cultivated as early as 8,000 years ago. Native to the Middle East, there are over 100 different varieties of date palm trees.

So grab your prepared pastry case or make your own and fill it with the delicious cream mixture!!!
